Overview of Massage
Massage therapy is the use of massage for both relaxation, as well as remedial and treatment purposes. Massage therapists can work in relaxation massage, remedial massage, sports massage or oriental massage.
It's important to get the right training before you can become a massage therapist and complete a recognised massage course. Once qualified, you can enjoy a varied and fulfilling career across several different industries. |
Studying Massage
In order to gain a recognised massage therapy qualification, you need to choose a massage training school that is listed as a Registered Training Organisation. Training is usually by completion of a massage certificate or massage diploma, and is available at many private colleges, as well as universities and TAFEs.
Massage training courses can last from three months to two years in duration.
Most massage courses will focus on building foundations in massage techniques, as well as knowledge of biology knowledge and business skills.
Careers in Massage
There are four different areas which massage therapists can work in: relaxation massage, which promotes relaxation; remedial massage, which aids in healing injuries; sports massage, which prevents or treats sporting injuries; and oriental massage, which uses eastern principles of finger pressure in order to rebalance energy.
Massge therapists are able to work in the health and fitness industry, as well as in tourism, medicine, and professional sport.
Many massage therapists also work freelance, though this can mean irregular hours. The work can be physically demanding, as strength in your hands is required, as well as long periods of standing up.
According to joboutlook.gov.au, job prospects look good for massage therapists in Australia.
