Canoe man Overview of Outdoor Recreation

The outdoor recreation industry is taking off, as the sense of adventure is a popular choice for the pro-active outdoor types. Outdoor recreation courses are challenging both physically and mentally.

There is also a strong theoretical component to studying sport and outdoor recreation. The practical fieldwork also includes outdoor activity and professional placements making this a fulfilling, well rounded course.

Studying Outdoor Recreation

Sport and outdoor education is a balance of physical activity, health and well-being, recreation and leisure, sustainability, sports, movement studies, leadership and education. Apart from the sport and outdoor recreation components, students can also study other disciplines like business, sciences, arts and education.

Through certain colleges you can attain a certificate in outdoor recreation or a diploma of outdoor recreation. A certificate in outdoor recreation will set you back around $950 (plus other costs).

TAFE also offers a variety of programs in different states. An alternative is to undertake a course through a number of universities which offer the program.

Outdoor recreation is a great practical course that allows you to study and work at the same, with professional placements and outdoor activity a crucial component to the program.

Careers in Outdoor Recreation

Career opportunities include general areas like sports training and development, commercial recreation, sports marketing, administration, physical education and outdoor education instructor and events manager.

The more specific careers include adventure tour guide, bushwalking guide, and cycle tour leader, rock climbing instructor and outdoor aquatics instructor and corporate outdoor training.

Skills needed in Outdoor Recreation

Outdoor recreation is a practical course that requires students to be prepared physically, mentally and emotionally. Strong leadership skills, good sense of judgement, awareness of the importance of safety practices and good interpersonal skills and communication are expected.

A fairly moderate level of fitness is also required and an active interest in the outdoors.
