Overview of Pathology
Pathology courses provide you with the skills and knowledge on blood and specimens collection. Pathology courses also provide training on laboratory techniques, clinical risks and infection control management.
Studying Pathology
Often offered as a certificate and diploma course in private health training institutions and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions, studying pathology provides accredited training for employment in clinics, private pathology centres and hospitals for blood and specimen collection. |
Pathology courses cover basic anatomy knowledge; the receiving, managing and processing of blood and specimen samples; sample testing; basic laboratory techniques, disinfection control and management; infection control management; usage of syringes, tourniquets and vacutainers; occupational health and safety; and drawing blood, fluids and specimens.
For individuals with no prior relevant work experience, the entry requirement for a TAFE pathology certificate course is a senior secondary education qualification such as a Vocational Certificate Education (VCE), Vocational Education & Training (VET) or Victorian Certificate and Applied Learning (VCAL).
A Year 12 qualification is a pre-requisite for studying pathology as a diploma. Traineeships may also be provided by private pathology practices. Mature age entry applicants may be considered if you have worked in a relevant sector.
Work placements training may also be incorporated in the programme.
Short courses for pathology over two or three days are more suited for individuals with prior knowledge in pathology or nursing, who would like to upgrade their knowledge and skills. Participants would need to show their previous accredited training certificates to be eligible for these short courses.
Pathology courses can be complemented with laboratory technology diplomas or a certificate in laboratory techniques.
Careers in Pathology
Pathology plays an important and multi-faceted role in the medical and science industries. Individuals trained in pathology are able to take on roles such as laboratory workers, medical laboratory technicians, medical clinic nurses, veterinary clinic nurses or assistants and blood collection workers.
Skills needed in Pathology
You may be required to complete senior first aid training before or during your pathology course. You are also expected to be organised and meticulous.
