Overview of Surveying
There are many types of surveyors, but we are focusing here on building surveyors. A building surveyor works with architects and town planners to inspect plans for buildings and advise on their suitability from a legal and regulatory standpoint.
Surveyors perform a range of important tasks throughout the design process, including issuing building permits once a building passes all standards, as well as assessing the condition of pre-existing buildings. A tertiary qualification in surveying is therefore necessary for a career in surveying.

Studying Surveying
In order to work in a building surveying career, tertiary study must be completed first. Entry requirements include passing English, Maths, and Science at school.
Once at university level however, there are many study options. Possible surveying courses range from a diploma in surveying or advanced diploma, to a bachelors degree in surveying, and it is important to choose a course accredited by the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors.
Surveying courses can vary from two to four years, and most involve both theoretical and practical elements.
Careers in Surveying
Surveyors can work for councils, governments, or health authorities. There are also jobs available with private firms, with opportunities to work overseas on exchange.
A surveyor ensures that problems are avoided in any building or structural design, from the foundations through to the completion of a design.
Therefore, it can be an extremely fulfilling career, providing change and opportunities within communities.
There are many opportunities to advance within this career as demand is high, and most surveyors earn a salary upwards of $100,000.
Skills needed in Surveying
Building surveyors are required to have expertise in building legislation and construction standards, which calls for an understanding of and enjoyment for technical work. Attention to detail and the ability to work within a team are also important requirements for the job.
