Construction Overview of Urban Planning

Urban or Town planners are involved in the shaping of cities, towns and regions by developing and advising on the development of those areas.

They are important players in designing functional communities, by making decisions that maintain the balance between built and natural environments, as well as considering what the community desires.

Studying Urban Planning

While it is possible to get a job within town planning without a degree, it is becoming more and more important to obtain tertiary education to be employed.

Qualifications in planning are available as a town or urban planning degree, such as a Bachelor of Town Planning. An urban planning course is usually four years in duration.

It is highly recommended to get work experience while studying urban planning in order to increase your chances of landing a job once you finish your course.

Postgraduate study is also available in town or urban planning, as an urban planning masters course, although not necessary to get a job.

Careers in Urban Planning

To work as a town planner, you will be involved in creating vibrant new public spaces, as well as conserving structures of value to the community. Planners can work in a variety of areas, including urban and regional planning, housing, health and communications and transport.

Therefore, urban planning is a highly satisfying career in that you can see real change in the community in which you live.

Urban planners can work either in the private or public sectors, including local, state and federal governments. Job prospects are good, with many opportunities for progression.

The average planner salary is around $75,000 per year.

Skills needed in Urban Planning

Communication skills are very important, as planners must effectively discuss new projects with a wide range of people, from the uninformed to the experts.

Town planners must also be logical, as much of their work involves problem solving and an interest in social issues is also beneficial.
