Overview of Web Design
Web design is the process of creating websites with a focus on both aesthetics and the mechanics behind them. Web designers need to understand how to create graphics and animations, as well as computer script programming.

Studying Web Design
It is possible to study web design at university in a Bachelors degree, such as the Bachelor of Multimedia Design, or Bachelor of Applied Design. These can be between three and four years in duration.
Skills in web design are also provided at TAFE level, usually between six months to a year in duration. Graduates from TAFE courses can achieve qualifications at either the diploma or certificate level.
Web design courses aim to provide students with enough knowledge of the industry and required software to be employable, and it is a good idea to create a portfolio to present to potential employers.
Careers in Web Design
Designers usually meet with clients to discuss their needs, and use this information to plan and then create the website.
However, web designers can choose to specialise in writing programming code, or designing workable interfaces, or liaising with clients when discussing the requirements for a site.
There are opportunities for web designers to work in private consultancy firms, or even to work freelance.
Skills needed in Web Design
Good communication skills are vital, in order to correctly understand and respond to a project. An aptitude for understanding new computer technologies is important in this highly technical role.
Producing fresh ideas with each brief is essential in web design.
